- Utilizing the first article, discuss what is locally grown and what is currently in season in your area.
What is grown locally:
Currently in season:
In season right now is almonds, apples, artichokes, figs, grapes, melons, nectarines, peaches, pears, plums, pomegranates, squash, strawberries, tomatoes and walnuts.
- Discuss your thoughts on seasonal/local foods and hospital menus.
I think hospitals should support local foods and purchase seasonal local ingredients for their patients. Buy doing so, hospitals can reduce the climate change footprint caused by transportation and long distance refrigeration. Eating seasonal foods ensures we get the most nutritious foods and brings variety to your diet which can be beneficial for patients who are lacking nutrients.
- Find a Harvest Calendar for your state (or a state you are interested in) utilizing the link in the first article (found underneath the example Harvest Calendar for New York State).
I was not able to find a calendar but found what is below for what is in season this month (October) in CA:
- What are your thoughts on the second article? Have you heard of obesogens before?
I have heard about obesogens but have never studied it. When I think of obesity, I think of someone who is overweight. This article explored the association that environmental chemicals have with obesity and it was extremely interesting to learn this. I never would have thought about chemicals being linked to obesity. I definitely think this is something that needs more attention and awareness because I am certain not a lot of people know of this. Especially low-income communities where childhood obesity rates are usually higher.
- Pick one of the potential obesogens discussed in the article and using your resources from earlier modules (such as toxnet), do some research on this potential obesogen. Share what you found!
I chose atrazine because in the article it was listed as a chemical pesticide in food and water that has been linked to increased BMI in children and insulin resistance in rodent. Upon searching for this chemical on Toxnet, I found that is is associated with cancer and other human health effects including adverse birth outcomes.
