MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET: BATTERY FLUID ACID
- What are the health risks associated with this chemical?
Exposure to the chemicals contained in batteries can lead to health problems, even if no physical contact with the acid is made. For example, in lead-acid batteries, breathing the exposed lead from a leak can cause damage to brain and kidney. This corrosive chemical can cause severe damage to your skin if contact is made.
- Is the chemical a carcinogen?
Some batteries contain sulfuric acid and individuals who have breathed large quantities of sulfuric acid at work have shown an increase in cancers of the larynx.
- What personal protective equipment or special precautions should be taken when working with this chemical?
- Wearing protective clothing is a good way to prevent burns on your skin.
- Be vigilant when working with batteries
- Working in a well-ventilated room can help you avoid breathing harmful vapors.
- Take precautions with batteries if you have children
- If this is a chemical found in your workplace, what training/education were you given about any risks associated with this chemical?
This was from my friends workplace and she said she was given education material on this chemical however, no training.
----
There were no discrepancies found when comparing the information I found on ToxNet to the information on the MSDS. The MSDS I looked at is an adequate tool for workers however, I think it needs to be in more simple terms for the workers to understand it. I especially like that this MSDS had different measures that include first aid measures, fire-fighting measures, and accidental release measures. The sheet did a nice job at describing the health effects if the chemical comes in contact with the eyes or skin or if it is inhaled or ingested. Please see below:
EYES: Direct contact with liquid may cause severe burns or blindness.
SKIN: Direct contact with battery fluid may cause skin irritation or damaging burns.
INGESTION: Swallowing this product may cause severe burns to the esophagus and digestive tract and may be
harmful or fatal.
INHALATION: Respiratory tract irritation and possible long term effects.
