Public health importance of safe drinking-water

WOW was my first reaction when I saw how much water earth holds. Over one billion people don't have access to clean water and it reminds me of how fortunate and blessed we are to have access to clean water. I am sure this video (Water Facts) will come to my mind tomorrow morning as I am having my coffee.

I was familiar with aquifers, however, I did not know at most of our surface water comes from aquifers. Groundwater is also essential as it is one of the Nation's most important natural resources. i often forget about groundwater because it is not something that we visually see such as rivers and the ocean.

Clean water is a basic right that everyone should have. The Clean Water Act is important because it protects water sources and public health. Although some of us have clean and safe drinking water at home, in the United States, the quality and safety of our drinking water continues to be an important public health issue. Therefore, we must improve public health education about drinking water risks, specifically education for public health and health care professionals. In order to make this happen, we must promote sufficient funding for federal and state drinking water programs.

Environmental Health in the News #1

Found this interesting  environmental health  news article  on cigarette butts in the ocean and how they not only harm the ocean, but also the marine life and us! These cigarette butts have filters made of cellulose acetate and "take a decade or longer to break down under ultraviolet light, which in turn disperses the toxic plastic into smaller bits." Makes me want to go to the ocean and clean up all the cigarette butts I see!  News article:   Cigarette butts are the biggest source of ocean garbage

M10.1 Video

1) Consider your workplace or a workplace of one of your family members. Are there chemical, biological, radiological or ergonomic issues? Using the industrial hygiene hierarchy of controls how might you address the issues? How are they being addressed in reality? Recently at work, there were some plumbing issues going on. A pipe from the floor above us was not properly working which caused the restroom that my department uses to overflow. Let me just say the smell was HORRIBLE. If feces exposure is a thing, then we were definitely exposed to that. The smell was so bad that we had to ask our manager to be moved to another office. This restroom was located next door to us therefore, we were really close. The water overflowed to the hallways and we had to wait for it to be cleaned up before stepping a foot outside our office. This was a big issue and I don't think it was addressed properly. The fact that we had to ask to be moved was not acceptable. I think our management should hav...
